The profane trinity: love, girls and dogs, ask Jacaues Brel why

Jacques Brel is one of the greatest singers of
all time. This Belgian poet and singer had a big contribution in modern French repertoire
of both modern music and literature. His poems resemble to a far extent to his rebellious
career and philosophy. Briefly, he lived what he wrote and sang what he experienced. This song
of his about dogs and girls, that i translated from French to English,is an example of what kind of artists Brel was

Girls

It’s as beautiful as
a game

It’s beautiful as
fire

This is far too
little

Girls

It’s beautiful as a
fruit

It’s beautiful as
night

It’s a lot of trouble

Girls

It’s as beautiful as
a r’nard

It’s as beautiful as
a r’tard

It’s way too late

Girls

It’s beautiful as
long as it can

It’s as beautiful as
farewell

And it’s much better

But dogs

It’s beautiful like
dogs

And it stays there

To see us cry

Dogs

It doesn’t tell us
anything

Maybe that’s why

That we think we love
them

Girls

It hangs in your face

It takes you to tea

It takes you the dice

Girls

It hangs on your neck

It hangs on the nail

It’s up to you

Girls

It hangs in your
heart

It hangs on flowers

It depends on the
hours

Girls

It depends on
everything

It depends mostly

It depends on the
pennies

But dogs

It doesn’t depend on
anything

And it stays there

To see us cry

Dogs

It doesn’t tell us
anything

Maybe that’s why

That we think we love
them

Girls

It’s hoop

It plays the brain

It’s played tango

Girls

It plays tinder

It plays against
cheek

It’s up to you

Girls

It’s playing

It plays to love

It’s about winning

Girls

Let them play the
little women

Let them play the
great ladies

It’s played out in drama

But dogs

It doesn’t play any
part

Because it doesn’t
know

How to cheat

Dogs

It doesn’t play any
part

Maybe that’s why

That we think we love
them

Girls

It makes you dream

It suggests

It gives you time off

Girls

It gives itself
however

It gives itself a
time

It gives and takes

Girls

It gives love

In turn

It overlooks the
courtyard

Girls

It gives you his body

It’s so hard

Let it give r’morse

But dogs

It doesn’t give you
anything

Because it doesn’t
know

Pretending to give

Dogs

It doesn’t give you
anything

Maybe that’s why

That we must love
them

And yet it’s for
girls

Only in the slightest
morning

Only at the slightest
sorrow

We deny our dogs
